Aromatic herbs in October

Growing aromatic herbs
October 06, 2011

The weather remains warm, and my aromatic herbs finally kissed by the rain offer new harvests. In October some of the herbs sowed last month have already been born, although I must wait to harvest them.

CressLast year the cress sown in the fall produced leaves throughout the winter, offering vitamins and a fresh touch for my dishes. This year I repeated the sowing, and soon the first leaves will be ready to harvest.

BorageLast spring I collected some Borage flowers from my father's garden, I kept the seeds and sowed them last month. This borage plant sprouted after few days: borage has silky leaves with a distinctive flavor, and can be eaten cooked or stir-fried.

Broad Leaf MustardBroad Leaf Mustard is another new plant: it is a mustard variety cultivated mainly for the leaves, quite resistant to low temperatures.

DandelionThe dandelion is still blooming. I used this flowers in many salads, like the Dandelion, chards and purslane salad.

SageThe sage is producing larger and tender leaves than this summer. It's time to finally prepare some sage pesto!

Curry plantThis curry plant is in the balcony near the entrance, so I can touch its aromatic leaves every time I walk past the pot.

CaperI'm nurturing my caper plant: if it manages to survive the winter, maybe I could finally harvest it.

SorrelMy favourite herb for 2011 was the sorrel, I used its leaves in many salads and sauces, and this morning after taking this picture I harvested some more leaves to prepare the Sorrel and Basil Focaccia.

CarawayI sowed again the caraway, I think it doesn't like the summer weather in Sicily but prefers lower temperatures.
